How to Clean Blinds

  1. Use the vacuum’s brush tool to clean your blinds regularly. Move it side to side across the slats instead of up and down.
  2. Clean your blinds with a lamb’s-wool duster, moving it side to side across the slats, starting from the top. Avoid using plastic dusters.
  3. When cleaning vertical blinds with dusting or vacuuming, only brush them downwards. Brushing upwards can cause the slats to come loose.
  4. To clean dust and residue off both fabric and vinyl blinds, use a rubber sponge, also called a dry sponge, which you can find at hardware or paint stores. Just firmly wipe the sponge across the blinds.
  5. For cleaning spots, spray a multipurpose cleaner onto a clean, dry cloth and then wipe the dirty spot on the blind. Do not spray the cleaner directly on the blind.
  6. You can clean wooden blinds with water, but make sure they don’t get soaked. Clean them where they are, instead of taking them down like you might with other kinds of blinds.
  7. If fabric blinds get really dirty, you should take them to be dry cleaned.
  8. Avoid cleaning blinds by spraying them with a hose used for car washing or by dunking them in the bathtub, whether all at once or one slat at a time.
  9. To clean metal and vinyl blinds, use this method: Take the blinds outside and place them on a small rug or carpet. Mix a few drops of dishwashing soap in a bucket of water. Use a car-washing brush to scrub the blinds side to side, then flip them and do the same on the other side. Rinse the blinds gently with a garden hose, tilting them to let the water run off. To avoid water spots, quickly slide your finger down the slats a few times to shake off excess water. Afterwards, hang the blinds over a fence or couch to dry.
